There are many varieties of space:

  • Physical spaces at scales ranging from cosmological to sub-atomic.
  • Formal and mathematical spaces, for example the space of Euclidean geometry
  • Metaphorical spaces, such as the space of musical pitches (high to low) or space standing in for time (e.g., going forward to the future)
  • Virtual spaces that exist in computer models.

As a scientist I have worked with all these categories with the aim of better understanding and modelling geographic space: the physical space of towns, cities, mountains and forests.
